New Books in Social Sciences Room

These are among the many titles we've recently added to our collection. Come visit us at downtown's Central Library and see what else is being featured on our "New Books" shelves on either side of the doorway as you enter from the Great Hall.

WHERE DEWEY FIND NONFICTION @ CENTRAL LIBRARY?

In the early days of library science in America, Melvil Dewey began assigning numbers to the various subjects of nonfiction books so people could find books about similar topics close to each other in the library. His not-so-secret classification code--the Dewey Decimal System-- has been used to arrange books on the shelves of many public libraries in the U.S. ever since.
At Central Library, books with Dewey numbers starting with 000.01 -- 339.99 are located here on the 2nd floor of the library directly east of the Great Hall. (The Library's Grants & Foundation Center is also nestled on its own shelves available to the public in this room --see slplgfcnews.blogspot.com.) Melville Dewey assigned low numbers to these subjects because he considered them basic starting points for understanding the concepts and human interactions that affect our lives.
