Muhammad Ali - 1942-2016

In the past we've celebrated the birthdays of people whose works appear in the Social Sciences collection; today we commemorate the passing of Muhammad Ali last night at the age of 74.

Earlier this week we received a new book, Nothing is Worth More Than This Day, a collection of quotes with the aim of helping the reader "find joy in every moment" that includes this quote from Ali (# 136 of 337 quotes).

The Library has many holdings by and/or about Muhammad Ali, including a few titles in the Social Sciences room:
  • What's My Name, Fool? by Dave Zirin, with the great photo of Ali on the cover
  • This is Where I Came In, a collection of three essays on the 1960s by Gerald Early, the first of which is titled "Muhammad Ali as Third World Hero"
  • Strange Gods: A Secular History of Conversion by Susan Jacoby. The book was published in 2016 - Chapter 20 deals with Muhammad Ali's conversion to Islam and poignantly contains the line "These days, the mortality of the seventy-four-year-old former heavyweight chapter is all too evident."
I've pulled these and some other titles from the stacks for a mini-tribute display to the Champ here in the room.

The Library also has a number of Ali-related films, including the 1996 documentary about the 1974 Ali-Foreman fight in Kinshasa, Zaire, Rumble in the Jungle. It's a classic; this librarian gives it two thumbs up.
